PERTINENT PATENTS

“I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions.”
By Sylvia Plath, American Poet

We focus on several amazing sewing machines and their utility patents, from the end of the 1 9th century that revolutionized the textile industry, including shoemaking, with exiting, new shoe designs that necessitated the use of a shoehorn and button hook to merely slip one’s foot into an extremely tight-fitting boot that could have had as many as twenty button holes to button or gromets to thread. This occurred during the Victorian Era and during the height of the Silver Craze, when there was an abundance of affordable sterling silver, as well as extremely talented silversmiths. Sterling silver shoehorns became all the rage and aux necessaires for both men, women and children!

Design Patents

We have also added several fascinating shoehorn illustrations from vintage design patents that were issued by the USPTO between 1897 and 1967. Complete patent information is available upon request.

Utility Patents

We added a few of the most influential inventors, and their innovative utility patents, issued by United States Patent Trademark Office (USPTO) that facilitated mass production of quality footwear and different sizes too, forever changing shoe manufacturing, and other textile manufacturing as well. I always thought that a lovely new pair of leather ankle boots, with pretty, pearl buttons might be the reason womens’ hemlines began to shorten just above the ankle. Complete patents are attached.
